Desktop flight simulators offer you the opportunity to refine your decision-making, risk management, and judgement skills before putting them to the test in real flight. In addition to ensuring you know how to follow instructions (execute correct instrument procedures), the desktop flight simulator encourages you to evaluate the situation so you can make decisions based on the circumstances.
Using the NALL report to look at trends, as well as accident databases, we have constructed 10 scenarios you can use to enhance your personal proficiency and training plan. Each scenario includes an objective, tips and hints, accident synopsis, and completion standards. These scenarios provide the opportunity to better plan for some of aviation's recurring accident themes: spatial disorientation, fuel management, VFR into IMC, CFIT, loss of directional control, and poor decision making. All of the approach plates and chart excerpts you need to fly the scenarios are included.
System Requirements:
- Windows-based computer running Windows 98 or later.
- On Top Version 8.1; NOT compatible with On Top Version 8, or previous versions of On Top.
- Adobe Acrobat Reader (viewing/printing the readmefirst which contains the approach plates).
- Unzipping utility (to extract the 'flights.zip' file). We recommend Winzip.
Installing and Running On Top Scenarios
1. Download and unzip the Flights.zip file contents to On Top's 'program' sub-folder. The default location for a 'personal use' On Top installation is:
'C:\program files\asa\On Top 8.1\program'.*
2. Download the readmefirst PDF; this document provides all the information you need to fly each scenario.
3. Start On Top as you normally do (with your flight controls hooked up, calibrated, etc.).
3. Press the SETUP button at the bottom of the cockpit.
4. Press LOAD SETUP. Highlight the name of the Scenario file you want to fly and press OK (use the file name as defined in the Configuration for each scenario description in the readmefirst document).
6. Press SET and begin flying the scenario.
*If you use ASA's analog PCATD, the location is "...On Top 8.1a\program". IF you use ASA's digital PCATD, the location is "...On Top 8.1d\program".
