What are the eligibility requirements for an Instrument Rating? An applicant for an Instrument rating must: Hold at least a current private pilot certificate with an airplane, helicopter, or powered-lift rating appropriate to the instrument rating sought. Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. Receive and log ground training on the aeronautical knowledge areas that apply. Receive endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying that the person is prepared to take the required knowledge test. Receive and log training on the areas of operation that apply. Receive a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying that the person is prepared to take the required practical test. Pass the required knowledge test. Pass the required practical test. Who needs an instrument rating? A private or commercial pilot must have an instrument rating and meet the appropriate currency requirements if that pilot operates an aircraft using an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight plan in conditions less than the minimums prescribed for visual flight rules (VFR), or in any flight in Class A airspace. Can I get instrument flight time in a flight simulator? A maximum of 30 hours may be performed in an approved flight simulator or flight training device, by an authorized instructor if the training is accomplished in accordance with 14 CFR Part 142.
